What You Should Know About Headache Medication

We all have been through a bad headache at least once in our lives; statistics say that every year approximately 95 per cent of women and 90per cent of men will have at least one headache. Most of us will reach out for headache medication right away to get rid of it as soon as possible for the simple reason that you cannot function very well with a throbbing head.

Most Used Headache Medication

Most of us avoid visiting a doctor for a headache and for that reason we all tend to use the non-prescription drugs easily available on drugstore shelves. This practice however requires some precautions.

You have to make sure that you are reading the labels carefully in order to ensure that the medication you are about to take will not provoke any allergic reaction or other side effects such as an upset stomach.

You need to know the amount of headache medication your body can tolerate. This information is usually available on the bottle and it is extremely important that you read it carefully before administering the drugs to yourself or any other family member. Needless to say that an overdose of any drugs can have serious side effects.

Types of Headaches

There are many types of headaches but they all are brought down under two main categories, which are, primary and secondary.

Migraines, tension headaches and cluster headaches are known as primary headaches and the headaches that derive from a primary condition such as an illness or treatment to an illness are known as secondary.

What Causes a Headache

Headaches are caused by many factors and some of them are stress, insomnia or any sleeping disorder, odors, colors, medication, foods, allergy, change of weather, emotional distress and/or panic attacks. There are many other factors as well which cause headaches and some of them are not yet known to us but the good news is there are headache medications to effectively deal with most of these conditions.

Some headaches will prove to be tougher than others due to which the over-the-counter headache medication will not work and a doctor’s consultation will be necessary. Those headaches are generally migraines or tension headaches, which may require an injection to ease them away. Regardless of the type of headache, make sure not to abuse prescription or non-prescription drugs and rather try to get to the root cause for your headache.
